Obviously the Ariana album has overshadowed any and all new releases this week: I’ve listened to a lot of other new tracks over the last couple of days and barely any have stuck in my head whatsoever. Would they have #popped without thank u, next to compete with? Maybe! But the cookie crumblin’ has occured and, in the words of Celine Dion, that’s the way it is.
Here are the only two songs being added to the 2019 playlist of fame this week:
▶️ Handmade Heaven – MARINA
Diamondless Mariana is four years on from the FROOT era now, but Handmade Heaven sounds like it could have comfortably been part of it: there’s an overwhelming feeling of melancholy hanging over this, much like there is with some of the best Lorde, Lana and ROL-era Madonna work; and I love the ~classic Marina~ layered vocals and interesting topline melodies. Lyrics-wise, isn’t hand-making your own heaven part of the VERY EXISTENCE of being gay?? Ugh! Her mind!
It’s gorgeous and I love it more with every listen, but also I’m AWARE that Marina said this song is a big red herring in terms of what this new era will sound like. So I await more new stuff with breath fucking BATED.
▶️ break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored – Ariana Grande
An obscure NSYNC sample? Okay!! This is the song that got added to the tracklisting of thank u, next at the eleventh hour, so it makes sense that it’s a bop: cheeky and playful, it’s a very 2019 retelling of Avril Lavigne’s Girlfriend: just as pop-rock was All The Rage back in the mid-00s, it’s trap-pop in the late 10s, and Ariana’s still keeping it fresh and exciting. We’re in the midst of a good old-fashioned, all-too-rare Imperial Phase and it’s just exciting seeing Ari have this much of a blast at the very top of the pop pyramid.
Here’s the year-to-date:
